Department of Computer Science and Technology

The Department's Building Services staff ensure the smooth running and security of the department.

Personal electrical equipment, laptops and PAT testing

Research students who choose to use their own laptops in the Department do not need to have these PAT tested. However, it should be noted that the use of adaptors for these laptops, especially foreign makes, is not desirable.

All other personal electrical equipment must be PAT tested by Building Services before being used in this department.

Recycling

The Department encourages recycling of all rubbish.

No individual office waste bins are provided, instead there are recycling stations on each corridor which separate the rubbish into three categories:

  • Food waste
  • Recyclable material
  • Non-recyclable material.

In addition, there are paper recycling bins next to printers and food waste bins in every kitchen.

The following items can be recycled:

  • Paper, magazines and envelopes
  • All cardboard
  • Phone books and catalogues
  • Clean foil (rinse before placing in bin)
  • Cans, tins and metal jar lids (rinse first)
  • Cartons
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • All plastic bottles
  • Plastic pots, tubs, trays and bags

Food waste bins in kitchens: Food waste only

Other rubbish including batteries, lamps, toner and ink cartridges, electrical equipment and large cardboard boxes can be disposed of in the Stores area as a separate recycle.

Energy efficiency

The William Gates Building is one of the most energy efficient buildings within the University, and we welcome your cooperation in using energy wisely. You can help with simple measures like switching electrical equipment off when you leave your office. More information on energy efficiency and other environmental measures in the building can be found here.

Alarms

The fire alarm, and other alarms in the Lab, are spoken warnings. The fire alarm is tested regularly on a Wednesday morning. If the alarm sounds at other times, you should leave all your belongings behind and leave the building by the nearest exit and may your way to the front of the building, Fire Assembly Point F, next to the bike shelter. Fire doors in corridors will close automatically when the alarm starts.

The Fire Manager will be looking to recruit new fire wardens; email building-services@cl.cam.ac.uk if you would like to do this.
