Purpose
The Premium Research Studentship is designed to enable exceptional scholars in all areas of computer science to undertake up to three years of full-time research leading to a Ph.D. Degree at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Computer Science and Technology. Successful applicants will have demonstrated that they have considered the role of computing in the future of the planet.
Who can apply?
Applicants should have at least a good first class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
Applications will not be considered from those who have already started their PhD studies. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding support from public bodies and the Cambridge Trusts. Unsuccessful applicants will normally not be allowed to resubmit in a subsequent year.
Decisions will be taken by the departmental Applications Panel and Head of Department: their decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into thereafter.
Duration
This scheme lasts for a maximum of three years for doctoral studentships. All students receiving an award are expected to complete their writing-up and submit their theses in the final year of departmental support.
The department may stipulate as a condition of the award that the student attends specific workshops or summer schools inrelevant research methods.
Research support available
The department will be offering a number full-time Premium Research Studentships to successful candidates starting their studies during the academic year commencing October of each year. The studentships may be in the form of one or more of the following:
- A maintenance bursary
- Research training support
- University tuition fees at postgraduate "home" rates
How to apply
Applications will normally be invited from recognised centres of excellence.
Applications should be made using the online form from Postgraduate Admissions and before the deadline for full applications, and should include:
- a full research proposal (maximum 3000 words including citations) to include an outline of first-year deliverables
- copies of recent publications in English
- two academic references
- academic transcripts
Timing
The Postgraduate Admissions Office deadline for submission of complete PhD applications is, at the latest, 15 May in the year of admission. However, we encourage international students to apply by no later than 1 December in the previous year. US students should apply by 12 October of the previous year, and 'home' students also by 1 December. Awards are to be taken up in the following academic year commencing October. No deferral is permitted.
