Google DeepMind Research Ready is a summer internship programme offering insights into AI research to those from backgrounds under-represented in this field.
It is open to current undergraduates or recent graduates who have the potential to become the future of research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. See our eligibility criteria for more details.
The 2025 Research placements are supported by Google DeepMind, the Hg Foundation and the Royal Academy of Engineering under the Google DeepMind Research Ready scheme. They have also been made possible by support from Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge.
This programme is run by the University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology and involves a paid 8-week research internship taking place between 7 July and 29 August 2025. You will work with a researcher in our Department on a project related to AI. You will also be assigned a PhD student mentor who will be able to support you throughout your internship. Alongside your research project, you can also attend:
- talks from academics working on AI,
- workshops on research skills, and
- information, advice, and guidance sessions covering topics such as postgraduate applications, wellbeing, and career advice.
You are not required to have any previous research experience, however those who have an interest in postgraduate study will benefit most from this programme.
The programme is designed to:
- give you to opportunity to experience life as a postgraduate researcher at the University of Cambridge;
- support you to develop your research skills;
- enhance your ability to make a competitive application for postgraduate courses and funding;
- highlight opportunities for postgraduate study and research careers in AI;
- give you the opportunity to engage with inspiring research staff and students.
You will also be invited to attend regular social events to get to know other interns in the Department as well as interns on different programmes at the University.
