Department of Computer Science and Technology

The Google DeepMind Research Ready programme is a summer internship programme offering insights into AI research to those from backgrounds under-represented in this field.

It is open to UK and Republic of Ireland residents who are studying/studied at a UK or Republic of Ireland university for their undergraduate degree and who have the potential to become the future of research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. See our eligibility criteria for more details.

The programme is supported via the Google DeepMind Research Ready funding stream.

Run by the University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology, it involves a paid 8-week research internship taking place between 8 July and 30 August 2024. You will work with a researcher in our Department on a project related to AI. You will also be assigned a PhD student mentor who will be able to support you throughout your internship. Alongside your research project, you can also attend:

  • talks from academics working on AI,
  • workshops on research skills, and
  • information, advice, and guidance sessions covering topics such as postgraduate applications, wellbeing, and career advice.

You are not required to have any previous research experience, however those who have an interest in postgraduate study will benefit most from this programme.

The programme is designed to:

  • give you to opportunity to experience life as a postgraduate researcher at the University of Cambridge;
  • support you to develop your research skills;
  • enhance your ability to make a competitive application for postgraduate courses and funding;
  • highlight opportunities for postgraduate study and research careers in AI;
  • give you the opportunity to engage with inspiring research staff and students.

You will also be invited to attend regular social events to get to know other interns in the Department as well as interns on different programmes at the University.

The deadline to apply is 09:00 on Monday 19 February 2024. Your referee will also need to submit their reference shortly after this deadline, so make sure that you leave enough time for your reference to be submitted. You can apply here
