Michael Ogunrinde, an intern on our Research Ready programme to widen participation in postgraduate study

We aim to support prospective applicants from the UK or Ireland in groups currently under-represented in postgraduate research at Cambridge University, for example due to their ethnic or socio-economic background, disability, or other protected characteristics.

Cambridge University is part of the Close the Gap project, which brings together Cambridge and Oxford Universities and other stakeholders to examine graduate admissions processes. Close the Gap has produced this guide to help PhD applicants from under-represented groups to find their way through the admissions process. The guide includes advice on:

  • approaching supervisors (all applicants to this Department should discuss their proposed research with a potential supervisor before submitting their application),
  • funding,
  • research experience,
  • writing a statement, and
  • interviews.

This general advice should be read together with the specific requirements on our website and in the University course directory.
