The Cambridge University Student-Run Computing Facility (SRCF) is trying to raise funds for a new updated cluster of machines and also taking hardware donations for its free video conferencing service. Could you help them?

SRCF is a volunteer-run student society that provides useful and flexible computing and networking services for members of the University, including web hosting, shell servers, mailing lists, video conferencing and more. For the past 21 years, it has attracted students interested in computing and technology and enabled them to freely experiment in a Linux sandbox. But it now needs to raise more funds to keep such activities going.

The SRCF is run entirely by volunteers. As such, it relies on financial and hardware donations. Prompted by an uptake in its free video conferencing service, which is available to all university members (and since 2013, to alumni as well), it is currently raising funds to give its main server cluster - thunder - a much-needed refresh.

The society would greatly appreciate any contributions to this goal such as donations of spare/decomissioned hardware (less than 6 years old) or contributions to its rolling fundraiser for new servers and regular upkeep costs. SRCF would also welcome anyone who wants to join its corporate sponsorship programme.

If you'd like to offer your help, please contact the society by emailing treasurer@srcf.net

Matias Silva, SRCF Treasurer

"At a time when computing is more important than ever, we are a key educational resource for both users and our system administrators," says Matias Silva, the society's treasurer.
