Department of Computer Science and Technology

We’re very pleased to share the news that Dr Prakash Murali will be joining us as a new member of our faculty in January 2024.

He is coming here as an Associate Professor in Computer Architecture. Welcome Prakash!

We are at a very exciting time in quantum computing. The technology is still in the early stages, but we have the potential to address major societal challenges in the coming years.

Dr Prakash Murali

Dr Prakash Murali is joining this Department as an Associate Professor in Computer Architecture.Prakash's work focuses on quantum computing. He says: "We are at a very exciting time in quantum computing. The technology is still in the early stages, but we have the potential to address major societal challenges in the coming years.

"My work asks fundamental design questions about the quantum stack what software, hardware and qubit technologies are required to scale up and solve practical problems? What is the right path to scale up quantum computers? What are the best ways to use current systems to help us design the next generations of systems? At Cambridge I am excited to pursue these directions in quantum architecture with my colleagues."

Prakash is currently a Senior Quantum Systems Architect as part of Microsoft's quantum computing programme. At Microsoft, his work led to the development of the Azure Quantum Resource Estimator which is one of the first architectural design tools that sheds light on the requirements to scale up quantum computers.

Prior to Microsoft, Prakash completed his PhD in Computer Science at Princeton University.

His PhD research was aimed at developing an efficient quantum computing stack to bridge the resources gap between quantum algorithms and hardware that is buildable in the near future.

His work has been adopted by several industry compilers, and has influenced architecture and industry benchmarking practices.
