This Department is home to several major research initiatives:
- The Accelerate Programme for Scientific Discovery. The Accelerate Programme aims to advance the frontiers of science through the application of AI. It provides young researchers with specialised training in AI techniques, equipping them with the skills they need to use machine learning and AI to power their research.
- The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits (4C). This new Centre, jointly based in this department and the Cambridge Conservation Research Institute, brings together computer scientists and conservation scientists to build a trusted marketplace for carbon credits and support global reforestation efforts. Its primary goals are to support students and researchers in the relevant areas of computer science, environmental science, and economics; and to create a decentralised marketplace where purchasers of carbon credits can confidently and directly fund trusted nature-based projects.
- The Data Trusts Initiative is hosted by this Department and organised in collaboration with the University of Birmingham. It funds research and engagement activities at the interface of technology, policy and the law.
- The Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre, a joint initiative with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. It conducts research to increase our understanding of teaching and learning computing, computer science, and associated subjects, with a particular focus on young people who are from backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in the field of computing or who experience educational disadvantage.
