Department of Computer Science and Technology

The University of Cambridge, Department of Computer Science and Technology, is recruiting an Assistant/Associate Professor in Algorithms and Complexity.

The focus of this appointment is algorithms and complexity, however, exceptional applicants from all areas of Computer Science will be considered.

The University

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is one of the world’s oldest and most successful universities. Consistently ranked among the global top institutions, Cambridge has been home to Newton, Darwin, Maxwell, Turing, Watson and Crick, Franklin, Hawking, and many others. Cambridge affiliates have received more Nobel Prizes than any other university, alongside numerous Turing Awards, Abel Prizes, and Fields Medals. We attract outstanding students from around the world and support them through a distinctive collegiate system spanning 31 autonomous colleges, combining close-knit communities with the resources of a truly international research hub.

The Department

The Department of Computer Science and Technology is an academic department with a world-wide reputation for academic research with consistent top research ratings. Formerly known as the Computer Laboratory, the Department is arguably the oldest one of its kind in the world, dating back to 1937, and is home to Turing Award and Nobel prize laureates.

We are highly research-focused: administrative and teaching duties are deliberately light and predictable, typically fewer than 30 hours of lecturing per year. Our PhD programme is supported by a broad portfolio of scholarships and college trusts. The culture is warm, supportive, and genuinely collaborative, with close ties to the Faculty of Mathematics and active links across the wider University.

The city

Cambridge is a beautiful city of medieval colleges, riverside meadows, and abundant green space. The architecture is remarkable, the quality of life is exceptionally high, and the city hums with independent cafés and restaurants alongside theatre, music and the arts. It is safe and family friendly, easy to navigate by bike, and served by excellent state and independent schools. Fast, frequent trains place central London about an hour away, giving access to a global capital while living in a calm, collegiate environment.
