Abstract: The aim of this talk is to introduce students to the type of work that many of the world's largest companies spend most of their IT budgets doing. We'll introduce a simple "Internet of Things" data processing pipeline (along with two white cats) and then discuss the challenges involved in designing a more complex, elastic solution that's capable of processing billions of transactions every hour.
Speaker details:
James Wyper studied Mathematics at Sidney Sussex from 1989-92. He spent the first 20 years of his career at Waitrose with projects ranging from crawling competitor websites to get data for price comparison, to fixing the Fruit and Vegetable Warehousing system whenever it crashed (which was usually at 2 a.m.). He now works for Ab Initio helping current and potential customers understand the value of their software and how to get the most out of it.
