Audiovisual facilities in lecture theatres

The room lighting is controlled by panels near the entrance doors. Using this panel you can choose between room illumination modes.

• 1   All lights on
• 2   Lecture using projection (less light on the screen)
• 3   Theatre mode (front lit, audience dark)
• 4   Cinema mode (mostly dark, vestigial lighting at the back)
• Off  All lights off

The arrow keys can be used to raise or lower the illumination.

The height of the lectern can be adjusted using the black switch on the left hand side of the worktop.

Push the switch down to lower the height of the worktop and push the switch up to raise the height of the worktop.

To connect your device(s), use the provided USB-C cable or HDMI cable.

You can also use the lectern PC and visualisers (more details below).

To power on the AV system, touch the screen on the lectern mounted tablet.

To select the correct source, on the Video Control tablet screen choose Left screen or Right screen (from audience perspective).

Choose the required source for that screen:

• PC
• HDMI
• USB-C
• Left Visualiser (from presenter perspective)
• Right Visualiser (from presenter perspective)

When a screen or source is selected it will turn blue.

There is a PC in the lectern that can be powered on via the rack on the right of the lectern. You can log into this PC using your Lab account. There is also a guest account available. More photos and further info coming...

By default, the confidence monitors will display the lectern PC. The left monitor will be the default display (not projected), the right monitor will be the extended display (projected).

To switch the confidence monitors to show what is being projected (e.g. you are using a laptop), toggle the Switch to Confidence Monitor button on the Video Control tablet screen.

It is common for the laptop screen to be the default display (not projected) and for the confidence monitors to be the extended display (projected).

The projectors can be blanked for privacy by pressing the Blank button on the tablet Video Control screen. This will toggle the projectors between outputting normally and outputting blackness.

The projectors can be frozen by pressing the Freeze button on the tablet Video Control screen. This will toggle the projectors between outputting normally and only outputting the frame being projected when the button is toggled on.

Each LT has five available mics; two hybrid/lanyard mics, two handheld mics and one throwable mic.

Hybrid/Lanyard Mic - Shure MWX1

Can be worn around the neck (recommended), clipped to clothing or used like a handheld mic. The mic is charged via the caddy. Please return the mic to the caddy after use.

To use the mic, lift from the caddy and it will turn on automatically. You can toggle the mic between unmuted (on) and muted (off) using the button on the body pack labelled push.

The LED will show as green when the mic is unmuted (on) and show as red when the mic is muted (off). The LED will blink between green and red for a couple of seconds, while initialising when first lifted from the caddy.

Handheld Mic - Shure MXW2 with SM58 Capsule

Used as a handheld mic. The mic is charged via the caddy. Please return the mic to the caddy after use.

To use the mic, lift from the caddy and it will turn on automatically. You can toggle the mic between unmuted (on) and muted (off) using the button on the body pack labelled push.

The LED will show as green when the mic is unmuted (on) and show as red when the mic is muted (off). The LED will blink between green and red for a couple of seconds, while initialising when first lifted from the caddy.

Throwable Mic - CatchBox

For audience questions. The mic is throwable, allowing it to quickly reach an audience member with a question. This also adds an element of fun and engagement to lectures and presentations. The mic is charged via its own caddy. Please return the mic to the caddy after use.

To use the mic, lift the cushioned cube from the caddy and it will turn on automatically. Allow audience members to throw the mic to other audience members until it reaches the intended participant.

The mic is very robust, but is usually thrown gently in the spirit of fun.

On the tablet Audio Control screen you can mute/unmute and adjust the levels of the connected device and mics.

The respective audio source can be toggled between muted and unmuted using the button labelled Mute. The level can be adjusted using the slider. The mute button will appear translucent when the source is not activated, will turn white when the source is activated/unmuted, and will flash white/blue when muted.

To power a particular projector on or off:

• Press and hold the University logo on the top and middle of the tablet screen, until the shield turns to colour.
• Press the three stripes in the top left corner of the tablet screen.
• Select Projector Power.

• From here you can power Left Projector or Right Projector (from audience perspective) On or Off.

The current status of the projector will also be displayed.

It is unlikely that you will need to access this setting, but it has been included for completeness.

• Press and hold the University logo on the top and middle of the tablet screen, until the shield turns to colour.
• Press the cog icon next to the three stripes in the top left corner of the tablet screen.

• Under Scheduled Shutdown you can change the time, in 24-hour format, that the whole system will shut down automatically.
• You can also Enable or Disable Auto Shutdown. The currently selected setting will show in blue.

To manually power off the system, press the red power icon in the top right of the tablet screen.

The system will ask Are you sure you want to turn off the system? Where you can select No Take me back or Yes I'm sure.

If you select Yes I'm sure then the system will shut down.

The system is designed to be as intuitive as possible. The most common screens that will be visited are the Audio Control screen and the Video Control screen. Either of these screens can be accessed by selecting the Audio or Video button at the bottom of every screen.

You can also select the three lines in the top left of the tablet screen. This will open up the menu where you can select between:

• Audio Control
• Video Control

If you have pressed and held the University logo until it has turned to colour, then all the options will be available from the same menu screen:

• Projector Power
• Audio Control
• Video Control
• System Options

If you wish to record your lecture using Panopto (available for teaching sessions only), then please speak the Undergrad Teaching Office. They will schedule the recording for the time in which your lecture is taking place. Panopto will capture the Lecture Theatre camera, audio from all the radio mics and whatever is being projected.

If you have any further queries related to Panopto, please speak to the Undergrad Teaching Office.

If you wish to record your lecture or presentation without using Panopto, or alongside Panopto (using Google Meet, OBS, Zoom etc), then you can use the lectern PC where the mics and camera are available as local devices.
