Abstract: Almost everything you know about university coding projects – short duration, small teams, stable requirements and clean data – has no relevance to the majority of IT work in commercial organisations. In this presentation we’ll introduce the concepts of Metadata and Data Governance, and how they can be applied to help companies manage their sprawling, complex and imperfect systems more effectively. We’ll touch on what makes Metadata Management technically interesting as a discipline and discuss how something that might be regarded as a necessary chore can be made more valuable than that.
